Bumthang is the largest valley in the Kingdom, and it is separated by Yuthongla Pass. Composed of four beautiful valleys, the deeply spiritual region of Bumthang is shrouded in religious fable. Sometime people considered Bumthang to be like Switzerland.

• Jakar (white bird) Dzong is situated on the top of the hill and it gives the spectacular view of Chamkhar valley. Tales of Guru Padma Sambhava dominate these holy shrines.

The Bumthang valley is home to the sacred Jambay, Kurjey Lhakhang, Tamshing, Kenchosum and other monasteries. Bumthang is also the traditional home to the great Buddhist teacher Pema Lingpa to whom, the present monarchy traces it ancestral lineage. The town of Jakar is the largest between Thimphu in the west and Trashigang in the east. Jakar is famous for its honey, cheese, apples and apricots. Bumthang is also famous for yathra which is a unique material woven from sheep wool, intricately designed and colored to form wonderful patterns.

• Kurjey Lhakhang: – One of the oldest Lhakhang in Bumthang Dzongkhag and it is located in Bumthang valley. The name Kurjey (“kur”-body and “Jey”-Print) was named after the dead of Guru Rinpoche and it is preserved in the cave in one of the oldest of the three temples. The second Lhakhang was built by first king of Bhutan Ugyen Wangchuk and the third was built by Azhi Kesang Wangchuk (Queen of the third King). It is also a must visit Lhakhang when you are at Bumthang.
• Jambay Lhakhang: – This Lhakhang is said to be one of the 108 temples built by Tibetan king Songsen Gyenpo in 7^th Century on single day to bring under control a demoness who have been stopping the spread of Buddhism.
• Tamzhing Lhakhang: –Tamzhing lhakhang is the most important Nyingma gompa in Bhutan. Its temple and monastry are remarkable for their direct connection to the Bhutanese terton and saint, Pema Lingpa(1450-1521) and his tulkus. It is now the seat of Sangtrul Rimpoche, the current speech incarnation of Pema Linga. Tamzhing consists of a deteriorating temple and a cramped vihara. It supports a body of over 95 Buddhist monks. In March 2012, the monastery was submitted for inscription on the list of world Heritage Sites. It currently resides on the tentative list.(Courtesy:Bumthang Dzongkhag)
• Lhodrak Kharchu Dratshang: – The Monastry is built with several building on the hilltop above the Chamkhar river bridge just opposite to Jakar dzong. The monastery was founded by Namkhai Nyingpo Rimpoche in 1970s with 400 monks residing in the monastery. These monasteries is a must visit monastery when you are in Bumthang.
• Kenchosum Lhakhang: – The temple was founded, according to the saint Pema Lingpa as far back as the 8^th century and in 1039, Bonpo Dragtshel, a Terton, discovered texts which had been buried by Padmasambhava in this location. According to legend, the king of the water deities was said to have risen out of the lake beneath the temple and offered Dragtshel a stone pillar and scroll. This concept of a lake beneath the monastery is also reiterated in another legend in which Pema Lingpa is said to have discovered the subterranean lake and concealed the entrance to it with a stone, which stands today in the courtyard of the monastery.
